Chapter 93
No.1
Kayden's small body suddenly jerked.
A violent tremor ripped through the five-year-old.Her back arched off the wooden bench, her eyes rolling back into her head. The fever had spiked too high. She was going into a febrile convulsion.
Elisa's heart slammed against her ribs like a sledgehammer. The physical panic seized her throat, choking off her air. She did not have time to launch a complex cyberattack. She did not have time to wait for Alastair's lawyers. If she did not break this stalemate in the next sixty seconds, her daughter's brain would suffer permanent damage.
Elisa shoved her phone back into her pocket. The suffocating wave of maternal panic suddenly receded, leaving behind the freezing, hyper-rational calculations of Faye. Legal threats were useless here. Power was the only language August understood, and she needed a weapon that could instantly decapitate his leverage. Her mind raced through her digital arsenal, locking onto a specific file she had secured days ago.
She stood up. She did not look angry. She looked like a corpse. Her face was completely devoid of blood, her expression locked into a terrifying, unnatural stillness.
She walked directly toward August.

She walked directly toward August.
Two of August's massive bodyguards immediately stepped forward, raising their hands to block her path. August raised two fingers. The bodyguards instantly stepped back, parting like the Red Sea.August wanted to see her beg. He wanted to watch her break.
Elisa stopped exactly eighteen inches from his chest.
She raised her own phone. She tapped the screen once, opening an audio file she had transferred weeks ago. She cranked the volume to maximum.
She pressed play.
The chaotic noise of the precinct lobby was suddenly pierced by a crystal-clear, digital recording.
"Get rid of the video," August's deep, arrogant voice echoed from the phone speaker. "Wipe the servers. I don't care what it costs. No one can ever see that Allena faked that fall. We are going to pin the entire assault on Elisa."
It was the secret recording from the security room at the Belmont estate.

August's entire body went rigid. The blood completely drained from his face. His pupils dilated so fast his eyes looked entirely black. He stared at the small device in Elisa's hand as if it were a live hand grenade with the pin pulled.
Allena let out a sharp, suffocated gasp. She slapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with absolute, paralyzing terror. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to lean heavily against August's arm to keep from collapsing onto the floor.
Elisa hit pause.
The silence between the three of them was deafening.
Elisa looked up into August's shattered, horrified eyes. The arrogant billionaire had just been gutted.
"This audio file," Elisa whispered. Her voice was so low only August and Allena could hear it. "Is currently sitting on a secure, automated server. It is scheduled to mass-distribute in exactly fifteen minutes."
She leaned in half an inch closer.
"The recipient list includes the front-page editor of the New York Times, the senior columnist at the Wall Street Journal, and the lead investigator at the SEC."

August broke out in a cold sweat. A drop of
moisture rolled down his temple. He knew exactly what this meant. If the public heard him ordering the destruction of evidence to frame his wife, the scandal would be apocalyptic. The SEC would immediately halt trading on Chambers Group stock. The board of directors would crucify him.
And Allena's carefully crafted image as the innocent, heroic victim would be instantly incinerated. She would become a national joke.
August's jaw clenched so hard his teeth ground together. The muscles in his neck bulged.
"If you send that file," August hissed, his voice vibrating with desperate, cornered rage, "I will make sure you never see the light of day again. I will destroy you."
Elisa did not flinch. She smiled. It was a cruel, dead smile that showed teeth.
"If my daughter dies on that bench," Elisa whispered, her eyes burning with absolute, homicidal intent, "I guarantee you, your mother, and this pathetic parasite will all burn in hell with her."
August stared into her eyes. He searched for a bluff. He searched for hesitation.

He found nothing but the absolute certainty of mutually assured destruction.
August swallowed hard. The lump in his throat felt like broken glass. He looked at Allena, who was shaking violently, tears ruining her makeup. He
looked at the police captain, who was watching them with growing suspicion.
Logic violently overrode his ego. He had to kill the story.
August took a deep breath. He smoothed the lapels of his cashmere coat, forcing his face back into a mask of calm, corporate authority. He turned his back on Elisa and walked over to the police captain.
"Captain," August said smoothly, though his voice was slightly tight. "It appears there has been a massive miscommunication. After speakingwithmy...associate, we have realized this was simply a tragic accident. The Chambers family will not be pressing any charges."
The captain frowned. He looked at the bloody bandage on Jewel's head, then at August. He knew he was being played by billionaires, but he did not have the political capital to fight it.
The captain nodded slowly. "Release her."

The two officers immediately stepped back. They unlocked the handcuffs.
Jewel rubbed her bruised wrists. She shot a look of pure, venomous hatred at Allena, then sprinted back to the bench. She scooped Kayden up into her arms, wrapping the jacket tightly around the convulsing child.
August walked back to Elisa. He leaned in close, his voice a low, threatening growl.
"Cancel the send. Now."
Elisa did,not even look at him. She turned her back on him completely.
"When my daughter is safe in a hospital bed, I will pause the timer," Elisa said coldly over her shoulder."Now, get out of my way."
She walked to Jewel. Together, they rushed toward the precinct doors.
August stood frozen in the center of the lobby. He watched Elisa's back as she pushed through the glass doors and disappeared into the night. His hands curled into fists so tight his fingernails pierced the skin of his palms, drawing tiny drops of blood.

Allena rushed to his side. She wrapped her arms around his bicep, pressing her chest against him.
"Oh, August, you saved us," Allena whimpered, trying to sound sweet and vulnerable.
For the first time in his life, August did not feel protective. He felt a sudden, sharp spike of absolute revulsion. He violently yanked his arm out of her grip, shoving her away.
"Don't touch me," August snapped.
Outside in the freezing air, Elisa threw open the heavy door of Alastair's armored SUV. Jewel scrambled into the back seat with Kayden. Elisa jumped in after them and slammed the door shut.
Elisa leaned over. She pressed her lips to Kayden's burning, sweaty forehead.
"Drive," Elisa ordered the security detail up front."Manhattan Private Hospital. Do not stop for anything."
