Chapter 91

The smell of motor oil and damp concrete filled Elisa's lungs.
She crouched swiftly beside the vehicle, her arms locking tightly around Kayden's small body. She pressed her face into her daughter's dark hair for a single, grounding second. The physical heat radiating from the five-year-old's skin was the only thing keeping Elisa's heart beating, but she forced the maternal panic down, letting the cold, calculating edge of her alter ego take over. Every second they lingered here was a liability.
Jewel stood next to the open door of the black armored SUV. She did not look at them, giving Elisa a fleeting moment of privacy. Her eyes scanned the concrete pillars and the exit ramp, her posture rigid with protective alertness.
Elisa's earpiece crackled. "Faye," Alastair said. His voice was a low, urgent rumble over the secure comms."We need to move. August is paranoid. If he realizes the corporate leak was a distraction,he will
turn that Maybach around and come straight back here."
Elisa's spine stiffened. The cold reality of the threat instantly froze her tears.
She pulled back. She wiped her face with the back of her hand, forcing her facial muscles into a calm, reassuring mask. She stood up and lifted Kayden, placing her gently into the back seat of the SUV.Jewel was already behind the wheel, the engine idling with a heavy, powerful hum.
Kayden reached out. Her tiny fingers locked onto the fabric of Elisa's coat. Her bright eyes were wide with confusion.
"Pourquoi tu ne viens pas, Maman?" Kayden asked, her voice trembling in flawless French. Why aren't you coming,Mommy?
Elisa's stomach twisted into a violent knot. She covered Kayden's small hand with her own.
"I have to stay and take care of Great-Grandpa,baby," Elisa lied, keeping her voice perfectly steady."He is very sick. I will come home to Long Island tomorrow.I promise."

Kayden pouted, but she slowly released the coat.
Elisa stepped back. She looked at Jewel in the driver's seat and gave a single, sharp nod. Jewel nodded back, her face pale but determined. She shifted the SUV into gear. The heavy tires squealed against the concrete as the vehicle shot toward the exit ramp, merging instantly into the dark Manhattan night.
Elisa stood in the empty parking space. She watched the red taillights disappear. She took a slow, deep breath, pulling the freezing air into her lungs until her chest ached.
She turned and walked to the service elevator.
Ten minutes later, she pushed open the door to Phineas's room. The room was completely silent. Her grandfather had fallen back into a deep, medically induced sleep.
Elisa sat down in the vinyl chair next to the bed. Her brain immediately shifted into analytical overdrive.
She replayed the phone call August had received. A predictive algorithm perfectly mirroring Project Chiron. Corporate espionage. A twenty percent stock
drop. Alastair had executed a flawless, devastating financial strike just to pull August out of this room.
The silence stretched on. The digital clock on the wall ticked forward.
Less than ten minutes had passed.
Suddenly, the silence was shattered by a loud, piercing electronic chime.

Elisa flinched. She pulled her phone from her pocket. The screen flashed with Jewel's name.
A heavy, sickening drop occurred in Elisa's stomach.Jewel knew she was supposed to maintain absolute radio silence until they reached the Long Island safe house.Jewel never broke protocol.
Elisa swiped the screen and pressed the phone to her ear.
"Jewel?"
She did not hear Jewel's calm voice. She heard the deafening wail of police sirens. She heard the crunch of metal and the chaotic shouting of angry voices.
And beneath it all, she heard a high-pitched, ragged sobbing.
"Elisa!" Jewel screamed into the phone. Her voice was completely hysterical, breaking on every syllable. "He hit us! A red sports car ran the light at the Queensboro intersection! He T-boned the SUV!"
All the blood instantly drained from Elisa's face. Her fingers clamped around the phone with bone-crushing force.
"Where is Kayden?" Elisa roared, her voice tearing her throat.
"She hit her head on the window!" Jewel sobbed, gasping for air. "There is so much blood, Elisa! She was terrified, and now she is burning up! She has a massive fever!"
Elisa shot up from the chair. She moved so fast the blood ruushed from her brain. A violent wave of dizziness hit her. The room tilted. She slammed her free hand down onto the metal bed frame, gripping it until her knuckles turned white to keep from collapsing.

"Call an ambulance right now," Elisa commanded, her voice dropping to a terrifying, mechanical coldness.
"I tried!" Jewel cried. "But the other driver called the
police first! The cops are here, and they won't let us leave! They locked us in the back of a cruiser!"
The temperature in Elisa's veins dropped to absolute zero.
"I am coming," Elisa said.
She hung up the phone. She grabbed her coat and sprinted out of the room.
She ran down the hospital corridor, her boots slamming against the linoleum. As she ran, her thumb jabbed at her phone, sending a single, encrypted text to Dr. Gottlieb Blevins: 'My daughter.Emergency.' There was no time for more. She hit the speed dial for Alastair.
"Faye?" Alastair answered instantly.
"Queensboro intersection crash. NYPD precinct,"Elisa barked, her breathing ragged. "Send your best criminal defense lawyer right now."
She didn't wait for a reply. She burst through the hospital lobby doors and threw herself into the back of a waiting yellow taxi.
Ten minutes later, the taxi slammed on its brakes in

front of the NYPD precinct. Elisa threw a fifty-dollar bill at the driver and kicked the door open.
She sprinted up the concrete steps and shoved the heavy glass doors open.
The precinct lobby was a chaotic nightmare of pale fluorescent lights, ringing phones, and shouting civilians. Elisa's black eyes swept the room with the precision of a sniper.
She found them in the far corner.
Jewel was sitting on a hard wooden bench. A thick white bandage was taped to her forehead, soaking through with dark blood. Her arms were wrapped tightly around a small bundle of clothes. Two massive, stone-faced police officers stood directly in front of her, blocking her in.
Elisa shoved a civilian out of her way and marched across the room.
"Move," Elisa hissed at the officers.
Before they could react, she pushed her way between them. She dropped to her knees in front of Jewel. She reached out with shaking hands and
pulled back the heavy fabric of the jacket.
Kayden's face was flushed a dark, unnatural red. A thick bandage was wrapped around her head, stained with fresh blood. Her eyes were squeezed shut. Her chest heaved with rapid, shallow breaths. Her tiny fingers were locked into the fabric of Jewel's shirt in a death grip. She was muttering delirious, incoherent sounds.
Elisa pressed her palm against Kayden's forehead. The skin was boiling hot. It felt like touching a live radiator.

Elisa's heart physically shattered. The pain in her chest was so sharp she could barely breathe.
She stood up. She turned around and faced the two police officers. The grief in her eyes vanished, replaced by a black, homicidal rage.
"Why is a bleeding, feverish child sitting in a police station instead of a trauma ward?" Elisa demanded. Her voice was not loud, but it vibrated with a lethal intensity that made the officers step back.
The taller officer recovered his posture. He lifted his chin arrogantly.
"Paramedics are en route, but until they arrive and clear the scene, nobody leaves this precinct," the officer stated with a practiced, bureaucratic coldness. "The other party has filed a formal complaint of attempted hit-and-run. We are required to hold all involved individuals for preliminary questioning."
Elisa let out a harsh, barking laugh. She pointed a rigid finger at Jewel.
"Look at her!" Elisa yelled, her control finally snapping. She pulled her phone out and shoved the screen into the officer's face. It showed a photo Jewel had sent of the black SUV. The entire passenger side was caved in."The impact is on the side of her vehicle! She was T-boned! She is the victim!"
"That is not what the other party claims," the officer sneered.
At that exact moment, the heavy glass doors of the precinct lobby were violently shoved open.
Four men in expensive black suits marched into the room. In the center of the formation was August
Chambers.

He was wearing his long cashmere overcoat. His arm was wrapped tightly around Allena's shoulders, pulling her flush against his side in a posture of absólute, aggressive protection. Allena did not have a single scratch on her face.
Elisa froze.
She looked at her husband. She looked at the way his large hand shielded his mistress from the chaotic room.
Then, she slowly turned her head and looked down at her five-year-old daughter, bleeding and burning with fever on a hard wooden bench.
The last remaining cell of human emotion inside Elisa Wilder died. Her eyes turned into two pits of absolute, freezing black ice.
