Chapter 81
No.1
"I can't believe he said that to me."
Allena's deliberately suppressed sobs echoed off the sterile white walls of the JHU medical school lounge. She sat curled on the edge of a cheap vinyl sofa, her face buried in her hands.
The heavy door swung open. Cameron Fields rushed in, his chest heaving. He saw her shaking shoulders and immediately crossed the room, grabbing a fistful of paper towels from the dispenser.
"Dr. Mills," Cameron said, his voice thick with sympathy. He knelt in front of her, offering the paper towels. "Are you okay? What Cromwell did in there was completely out of line."
Allena took the towels. She lifted her face. Her eyes were perfectly red, her mascara slightly smudged to maximize the victim effect. She bit her lower lip, letting it tremble.
"I only wanted to protect the academic purity of this
project, Cameron," Allena whispered, her voice cracking. "I just wanted to make sure the data was safe. And he humiliated me in front of everyone."
Cameron's hands curled into tight fists. The young researcher's face flushed with a mix of male protective instinct and academic outrage.
"Cromwell is a tyrant," Cameron spat. "And honestly,I deeply question Elisa Wilder's actual capabilities. No one just walks into a Chief Technical Advisor role without a massive trail of published research."
Allena leaned back against the sofa. She let out a long, shaky breath, her eyes darting to the floor as if she were carrying a terrible secret.
"You don't know the half of it, Cameron," Allena murmured softly. "Last night, after the gala... I saw Elisa getting into Alastair Cromwell's private Maybach. It was late. And the way he was touching her... fixing her seatbelt, leaning entirely over her body."
Cameron's pupils violently expanded.
"Are you serious?" Cameron asked, his voice dropping to a shocked whisper.
"I saw it with my own eyes," Allena lied smoothly, letting a tear slip down her cheek. "It breaks my heart. We are all working so hard, and she just...opens her legs in the backseat of a luxury car to get the top position."
The male jealousy and moral superiority inside Cameron instantly ignited into a blazing fire. His jaw locked. He felt sick to his stomach. He was looking at a brilliant, innocent doctor crying on a cheap sofa, while a manipulative fraud was running the billion-dollar project.
"I knew it," Cameron hissed. "She's an academic fraud."
Within two hours, the poison spread.
Cameron didn't keep his mouth shut. He typed furiously on his phone. The rumor, heavily exaggerated and laced with toxic outrage, ripped through the internal JHU Slack channels like wildfire.
At exactly 2:00 PM, Elisa pushed open the heavy glass doors of the main project hall.
No.2
She was carrying a thick stack of printed data reports. The massive room, usually buzzing with the
frantic energy of fifty coders and researchers, instantly went dead silent.
The silence wasn't respectful. It was thick, suffocating, and dripping with hostility.
Elisa stopped walking. Her black eyes swept acrosS the room. She felt the physical weight of dozens of eyes staring at her. She saw the disgust. She saw the junior researchers looking back and forth between her face and the reports in her hands.
A female researcher sitting near the front row leaned back in her chair. She didn't bother to lower her voice.
"It must be nice," the woman sneered to the guy sitting next to her. "Some of us have to publish to get ahead.I hear others just need to secure a favorable 'seat assignment' on the way home from a gala."
Elisa's footsteps stopped completely.
Her spine snapped perfectly straight. The temperature in her veins dropped to absolute zero. She didn't blush. She didn't gasp. She slowly turned her head. Her eyes locked onto the female researcher with the terrifying, surgical precision of a
sniper scope.
The woman physically flinched under Elisa's dead stare. She instinctively pushed her chair back half an inch, but she forced her chin up, trying to look defiant.
Elisa didn't say a single word in her own defense.
She walked directly to the main control console at the front of the room. She raised the heavy stack of data reports and slammed them down onto the metal desk.
The loud, violent crack echoed through the silent hall like a gunshot.
Elisa reached out and violently tapped the keyboard. The massive digital projector behind her flared to life, displaying the core algorithm interface of Project Chiron.
"Your data processing is absolute garbage," Elisa stated. Her voice was a flat, freezing monotone that cut through the room.
She pointed a rigid finger at a block of red code on the screen.
"Line 408," Elisa commanded, her voice cracking like a whip. "You used a linear regression model for a non-linear neural pathway. It is a fundamental, embarrassing logic error. If I ran this code, it would misdiagnose a stage-three tumor as a benign cyst. You are playing with human lives, and your math is at a high-school level."
The entire room stared at the screen. The female researcher's face drained of color.
Cameron stood up from his desk in the middle of the room. His face was red with anger.
No.3
"You have a lot of nerve coming in here with that arrogant attitude, MAs. Wilder," Cameron shouted."Especially considering we all know you didn't even write that core code yourself!"
Standing in the shadows near the back exit, Allena crossed her arms. A sick, triumphant smirk twisted her lips. She watched Elisa being isolated and attacked by the entire room.
Before Elisa could respond, the heavy double doors of the project hall were violently shoved open.
Alastair Cromwell marched into the room.
He wasn't alone. Flanking him were two massive,stone-faced corporate lawyers in immaculate suits.
The air pressure in the room instantly plummeted.Alastair's face was a mask of dark, homicidal rage.He didn't look at the researchers. He walked straight down the center aisle, his expensive shoes clicking sharply against the floor.
He stopped directly next to Elisa. He turned his body slightly, placing himself between her and the hostile room in an absolute, undeniable posture of protection.
Alastair raised a thick, leather-bound legal file and dropped it onto the console next to Elisa's reports.
"Given the absolute lack of basic professional decency and academic integrity in this room,"Alastair's voice boomed, vibrating with terrifying corporate authority, "Aethel Intelligence is officially re-evaluating this entire partnership."
Cameron's face went completely white. His knees visibly shook.
"Mr. Cromwell," Cameron stammered, his voice cracking. "We... we just have reasonable doubts
about Ms. Wilder's qualifications..."
"Shut your mouth!" Alastair roared.
The sound was deafening. Several people in the front row physically jumped.
"Elisa Wilder is the sole, undisputed creator of Project Chiron," Alastair stated, his words hitting the room like physical blows. "She built the architecture. She owns the patents. Without her brain, Johns Hopkins University wouldn't even be allowed to look at a single line of this code!"
The entire hall gasped. Total, paralyzing shock swept through the researchers. They stared at the woman they had just called a whore, realizing they had just insulted the actual god of their project.
Alastair didn't give them a second to recover. He leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the console.
"I am issuing a final ultimatum," Alastair said, his voice dropping to a lethal, freezing whisper. "If I do not have the signed resignation letters of every single person who participated in spreading this disgusting rumor on my desk by eight o'clock
tomorrow morning... Aethel will immediately terminate the core Al licensing agreement."
No.4
The room fell into a suffocating, dead silence.
Losing the license meant the multi-billion dollar project was dead. It meant their careers were over.
In the back of the room, Allena's smirk shattered. Her legs gave out, and she had to lean heavily against the wall to keep from collapsing. She never imagined Alastair would risk a billion-dollar deal just to protect one woman.
Professor Finch burst through the side door, sweating profusely. He had practically sprinted from his office.
"Alastair, please!" Finch begged, holding his hands up. "Do not destroy this academic collaboration over some stupid gossip. We can handle this internally!"
Alastair slowly turned his head to look at the professor.
"Tolerating malicious rumors is academic corruption,Sterling," Alastair said coldly. "Aethel does not work with garbage."
Elisa stood perfectly still. She looked at Alastair's sharp, uncompromising profile. The thick, freezing armor around her heart cracked just a fraction of a millimeter.
"Thánk you," Elisa whispered. Her voice was incredibly quiet, but it carried a weight of absolute sincerity.
Alastair turned his head to look at her. The terrifying rage in his eyes instantly vanished, replaced by a warm, steady light.
"Sweeping out the trash for you is my privilege,Faye," Alastair murmured softly.
He placed a gentle hand on the small of her back and guided her away from the console. They walked out of the project hall together, leaving behind a room completely paralyzed by panic, regret, and the terrifying reality of their own destruction.
The air inside the JHU Dean's office was thick with the smell of stale coffee and absolute panic.
The Dean slammed the heavy phone receiver down onto its cradle. He had just finished a screaming match with the university's board of directors. Sweat beaded on his forehead, dripping down his temples.
If Aethel Intelligence pulled the Chiron license tomorrow morning, the project was dead. If the project died, the Dean's career was over.
His hands shook as he reached for his private cell phone. He scrolled through his contacts and hit the secure line for August Chambers. He pressed the phone to his ear, his posture physically shrinking as the line rang.
"Mr. Chambers," the Dean begged, his voice high and desperate. "We have a catastrophic situation.I need your immediate intervention."
Thirty minutes later, the heavy thud of helicopter
rotors shook the glass windows of the JHU administrative building.
No.5
August Chambers stepped off his private chopper onto the rooftop helipad. He wore a dark, tailored suit, his face set in a mask of absolute, freezing authority. Two senior executive assistants flanked him as he mnarched toward the elevator.
In the hallway outside the Dean's office, August listened to his lead assistant summarize the disaster.
"Cromwell threatened to pull the license because of rumors circulating about Ms. Wilder," the assistant said quickly. "The rumors were traced back to Cameron Fields, who claims he heard them from Ms.Mills."
August's jaw locked. The muscles in his neck bulged. He knew exactly what Allena had done. She had taken the jealousy from last night and turned it into a weapon. It was reckless. It was stupid.
But as he pushed open the heavy oak doors of the conference room, his anger evaporated.
Allena was sitting in the corner of the room. She was curled into a tight ball, her arms wrapped around her
knees. She was shaking violently, her eyes red and swollen with tears. She looked small, terrified, and completely broken.
The protective, toxic instinct inside August instantly overrode his logic. He would not let his woman be publicly slaughtered by Alastair Cromwell.③
August walked straight across the room. He crouched down and grabbed Allena's freezing hands.
"l've got this," August whispered, his voice a low, absolute promise. "I will fix it."②
He stood up and slowly turned around.
The Dean and Professor Finch were standing near the conference table, watching him with terrified eyes. They were waiting for the billionaire to pass judgment.
August walked toward them. He didn't look worried. He looked arrogant. He reached up and casually twisted his platinum cufflink.
"Dean," August said, his voice smooth and dripping with financial dominance. "I have a solution to your current... instability. The Chambers Group is
prepared to issue an immediate, unrestricted secondary grant to the medical school."
The Dean's breath hitched. "How much, Mr.Chambers?"
"Fifty million dollars," August stated coldly.
The Dean physically gasped. Professor Finch's eyes widened in shock. Fifty million dollars was an astronomical sum. It was enough to cover any financial penalties from Aethel, fund the lab for a decade, and completely silence the board of directors.
"There is only one condition," August continued, his dark eyes locking onto the Dean. "This entire rumor incident is buried permanently. No one is fired. No one resigns. And Ms. Mills is completely exempted from any demands for a public apology."
No.6
Professor Finch slammed his hand down on the table. His face was red with academic outrage.
"You cannot do this!" Finch yelled. "This is a gross violation of academic integrity! You cannot use a checkbook to wash away moral corruption!"
August slowly turned his head. He looked at Finch with the cold, dead eyes of a predator.
"Professor," August sneered softly. "Does your advanced imaging lab still require that ten-million-dollar equipment upgrade next quarter?"
Finch's mouth snapped shut. The color drained from his face. The crushing, suffocating weight of capitalist reality slammed into his chest. He closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping in absolute, defeated agony. He had to choose between justice for Elisa and the survival of his life's work.
He chose the lab.
The Dean immediately stepped forward, a sickeningly eager smile stretching across his face.
"We accept your generous terms, Mr. Chambers,"the Dean said quickly. "I will personally contact Mr.Cromwell and explain that this was all a terrible misunderstanding."
The news spread back to the project hall in less than ten minutes.
Cameron Fields and the other researchers, who had
been packing their boxes in terror, suddenly stopped. The threat of termination was gone. They looked toward the door as Allena walked back into the room.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She walked with her chin held high, her shoulders back. She had just survived a nuclear strike. Because of August's money, she wasn't the villain anymore;she was the untouchable queen who had just secured fifty million dollars for the department. The researchers looked at her with a sickening mix of fear and gratitude.
Standing on the second-floor glass bridge overlooking the main hall, Elisa watched the entire pathetic display.
She wore a dark trench coat, her hands resting lightly on the glass railing. Her face was completely devoid of emotion.
Below her, August walked out of the Dean's office. He stepped into the main hall and stopped. He slowly tilted his head back, his dark eyes scanning the upper levels until they locked directly onto Elisa.
August's chest heaved. A flicker of guilt flashed in his
eyes, but he instantly buried it under a tnick layer or arrogant provocation. He stared up at her, his posture screaming victory. He had just used his wealth to crush her ally's threat.
Elisa didn't look angry. She didn't look defeated.
No.7
The corners of her mouth slowly curved up into a smile of absolute, chilling mockery. She looked at August the way a scientist looks at a rat running happily into a lethal trap.
She pulled her phone from her pocket. She opened a secure encrypted chat with Alastair.
"I've invoked the data integrity clause of the Academic Honesty Protocol," Elisa typed, her thumbs moving rapidly. "JHU's team has been sandboxed. They can view sanitized outputs, but they have zero write-access and cannot touch the core architecture. They just bought a fifty-million-dollar museum ticket."
A second later, Alastair replied with a single emoji: a clinking champagne glass.
Elisa slipped the phone back into her pocket. August had just spent fifty million dollars to buy an empty,
useless shell of a project.
Down on the floor, August watched Elisa turn her back on him and walk away. A sudden, violent spasm of panic gripped his stomach. Her smile hadn't been a surrender. It had been a goodbye.
He took a step toward the stairs, an irrational urge to chase her flooding his brain.
"August!"
Allena practically threw herself at him, wrapping her arms tightly around his bicep. She pressed her chest against him, her voice dripping with sugary gratitude."You saved me. You are mny absolute hero."①
August was forced to stop. He looked down at her.The heavy, cloying scent of her floral perfume hit his nose. For the first time in his life, the smell didn't make him feel protective. It made his stomach churn with a sudden, suffocating irritation.
He awkwardly patted her shoulder, his eyes still locked on the empty glass bridge where Elisa had been standing.
Outside the building, Elisa stepped into the freezing
Manhattan air. She pulled a plastic JHU access card from her pocket. She didn't even look at it. She casually tossed it into a metal trash can on the sidewalk.
She was done playing their pathetic games.
