Chapter 68

The heavy silence in the study was deafening. The three lawyers stood like statues, their eyes fixed on the thick stack of legal documents resting on the mahogany desk.

Elisa stared at the heavy gold nib of the Montblanc pen Germaine was holding out to her.

Her mind raced, desperately searching for a loophole, a tactical exit, a way to flip the board. But there was nothing. Germaine held the absolute high ground. The threat to Phineas was immediate, physical, and lethal.

Elisa closed her eyes.

Behind her eyelids, she didn't see August's betrayal. She didn't see Allena's smug face. She saw the frail, trembling hands of her grandfather. She saw the terror in his eyes when the dementia took hold. He was the only innocent person in this entire war.

She could not gamble with his life.

When Elisa opened her eyes, the burning, violent rage was completely gone. Her black eyes were flat, dead, and terrifyingly calm. The last remnants of her humanity, her pride, and her desire for conventional justice were permanently extinguished.

She reached out and snatched the heavy gold pen from Germaine's hand.

Elisa didn't read the fifty pages of legal jargon. She didn't need to. She knew exactly what it was: a digital and social death sentence.

She flipped to the signature page of the Non-Disclosure Agreement. She pressed the pen to the paper. The scratching sound of the nib cutting across the thick parchment echoed loudly in the quiet room.

She signed her name. Sharp, aggressive, and final.

She pulled the compensation agreement forward and signed that as well.

Germaine watched her, a look of supreme, arrogant satisfaction settling over her wrinkled features. She had won. She had successfully bought the silence of a problem and protected her family's stock price.

The lead lawyer stepped forward, quickly gathering the signed originals. He slid a single, thin folder containing the copies across the desk toward Elisa.

Germaine sat back in her leather chair, steepling her fingers.

"You made the smart choice, Elisa," Germnaine said, her voice dripping with a sickening, patronizing pity."Take the fifty million. Disappear from New York. Go buy a quiet little house somewhere and live the mediocre life you were always destined for."

Elisa picked up the folder. She didn't put it in her bag.She casually, almost disrespectfully, rolled the expensive legal documents into a tight cylinder in her fist.

She looked at Germaine. A slow, chilling smile spread across Elisa's face.

"Fifty million dollars to buy the Chambers family's honor," Elisa mocked, her voice a soft, lethal whisper."You got a terrible deal, Germaine. Your honor isn't worth fifty cents."

Germaine's smug expression faltered. A flash of genuine anger tightened her jaw, but she forced

herself to remain calm. She viewed Elisa's insult as the pathetic, final barking of a beaten dog.

Elisa turned on her heel. She walked toward the heavy double doors.

Just as her hand touched the brass handle, she stopped. She didn't turn around.

"Make sure the checks to the medical center clear on time," Elisa said, her voice echoing off the dark wood paneling. "If my grandfather misses a single dose of his medication... if he loses a single hair on his head... I swear to God, Germaine, I will burn this entire estate to the ground with you locked inside it."②

Before Germaine could respond, Elisa shoved the doors open and walked out.

Bang. The heavy doors slammed shut behind her, sealing the old woman in her tomb of a study.

Elisa walked down the long, silent corridors of the manor. Every step she took felt lighter, yet infinitely more dangerous.

She pushed through the servants' door and stepped out into the freezing night air. The cold wind whipped

against her face, but she didn't shiver.

She walked to the shadows where she had parked the Porsche. She slid into the driver's seat and closed the door.

As soon as the cabin sealed, her phone vibrated in her pocket.

She pulled it out. It was an automated, encrypted alert from a Swiss banking server.

Transfer Complete. $50,000,000.00 USD deposited into Offshore Trust Account.

Elisa stared at the glowing numbers.

Fifty million dollars. It was an obscene amount of wealth. But looking at it made her stomach churn with physical nausea. This money was the price of her reputation. It was the price of being branded a psychotic homewrecker by the entire world.

She rested her forehead against the cold leather of the steering wheel.

In the absolute darkness of the car, a single, hot tear slipped from the corner of her eye and tracked down her cheek.

It wasn't a tear of sadness for her marriage. It wasn't a tear of fear. It was a tear of mourning for the woman she used to be. The quiet, enduring nurse who believed that the truth would eventually win. That woman was officially dead.

Elisa lifted her head. She wiped the moisture from her cheek with the back of her hand.

She opened the Twitter app one last time. The JusticeForAllena hashtag was still trending. The world still thought she was a monster.

Because of the NDA, her mouth was legally sewn shut. She could never go to a journalist. She could never post a defense online.

But as she stared at the screen, her eyes hardened into two chips of black ice.

The law had silenced Elisa Wilder.

But the law had absolutely no jurisdiction over Faye.

Germaine thought she had bought peace. She didn't realize she had just handed a fifty-million-dollar wvar chest to the most lethal digital architect on the planet. If Elisa couldn't destroy them in the tabloids,

Faye would slaughter them on the global financial stage.

Elisa reached down and twisted the ignition.

The Porsche's engine roared to life, a deep, guttural scream that shattered the quiet night. She slammed the car into gear and tore out of the estate, heading straight for Manhattan.
