Chapter 44
No.1
The morning sun cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Elisa's temporary luxury rental.
She sat at the marble kitchen island, holding a cup of black tea. Her phone, resting on the counter, vibrated with a sharp, singular buzz.
It was a push notification from her private banking app.
Elisa tapped the screen. The numbers loaded.
An incoming wire transfer of ten million dollars had just cleared. The origin account was August's private offshore trust.
The transfer itself was completely clean, devoid of any digital memo that could be traced back to him.August was a monster, but he was a legally meticulous one. He never left a paper trail.
A second later, her phone buzzed again. An incoming call from Simon, August's senior executive assistant.Elisa pressed accept, putting it on speaker.
"Ms. Wilder," Simon's voice clipped through the speaker, carrying the distinct, arrogant inflection of his boss. "Mr. Chambers instructed me to inform you that the final settlement funds for the Hampton property have cleared. HHe also added a discretionary bonus. His exact words were: 'Consider it a severance package. Tell her to buy some decent clothes and stop embarrassing me. He considers your accounts officially settled. Have a good day."
The line went dead.

Elisa stared at the screen. The total available balance now sat at twenty-five million dollars.
She didn't feel a spike of anger at his arrogant proxy delivery. Instead, a low, dark, incredibly genuine laugh bubbled up from her chest. It echoed in the empty apartment.
August thought he was paying her off. He thought he was buying her silence and submission with his pocket change. He had no idea he was personally funding the war machine that was about to annihilate him.①
Elisa set the teacup down.
Two hours later, she stepped out of a black car in front of the largest Porsche dealership in Manhattan.
She was wearing a bespoke, razor-sharp black suit. The cut was aggressive, the fabric screaming quiet, lethál wealth. She looked like an executioner.
She walked through the slidling glass doors. The showroom floor was gleaming.
A senior sales manager in a tight suit immediately started walking toward her, his eyes scanning her outfit, preparing his pitch.
Elisa didn't look at him. She walked straight past the standard models and stopped in front of the centerpiece of the showroom.
No.3
A dark agate grey Porsche 911 GT3.
It sat low to the ground, its aerodynamic lines looking less like a car and more like a weapon.
"Ma'am, that vehicle is..." the manager started to say, catching up to her.
Elisa reached into her pocket and pulled out her heavy, black titanium Aethel corporate card, backed by her new personal funds. She held it out between
her index and middle fingers.
" am paying in full," Elisa said, her voice cutting through the ambient showroom music like a blade."I want this vehicle registered, insured, and delivered to my exact specifications. Contact Aethel's legal department; they will expedite the state processing.Make the paperwork happen."
The manager looked at the card, then at her eyes. He swallowed his sales pitch instantly. "Right away,ma'am. We will prioritize this immediately."
A few days later, thanks to the ruthless efficiency of Aethel's corporate fixers, the dark agate grey beast was parked directly in front of her luxury rental.
Elisa walked out into the crisp morning air and slid into the low, carbon-fiber bucket seat.

Her hands wrapped around the Alcantara steering wheel. She turned the ignition key.
The naturally aspiratedI flat-six engine roared to life. The sound was a violent, mechanical scream that vibrated through the carbon-fiber seats and directly into Elisa's bones.
That deafening roar shattered the last invisible chains of the submissive wife she had played for seven years. Faye was fully online.
She dropped the car into gear and launched the GT3out of the showroom, merging brutally into the Manhattan traffic.③
Thirty minutes later, the grey Porsche tore down the street and slammed its brakes in front of the towering glass facade of the Aethel Intelligence headquarters. The tires shrieked against the pavement.
Elisa pushed the heavy door open and stepped out.
She tossed the keys to a stunned valet without breaking stride and walked up the wide marble steps.
Just as her hand reached the revolving door, a high-pitched, grating laugh echoed from the side plaza.
Elisa paused.

Walking toward the entrance, surrounded by three fawning assistants, was Allena. She was dressed in a pristine, baby-blue Chanel suit, her medical boot clicking awkwardly against the stone.

Allena spotted Elisa. The smile on her face instantly morphed from fake sweetness to overt, sneering condescension.
She adjusted her grip on her cane and deliberately altered her path to intercept Elisa.
"Well, well," Allena said loudly, looking Elisa up and down. "Look who it is. Tell me, Elisa, are you here to apply for the janitorial staff? Or maybe a low-level receptionist job?"
The assistants behind Allena snickered on cue, looking at Elisa with open pity.
Allena lifted a thick, leather-bound portfolio, tapping it against her manicured nails.
"I am here for a high-level meeting," Allena bragged, her voice dripping with self-importance. "Iam submitting a partnership proposal to Aethel's Chief Architect. The legendary Faye."
Allena leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a mocking whisper. "I doubt a nurse who can barely read a blood pressure cuff has ever heard of her. She's a genius. Everything you are not."

Elisa stood perfectly still.
She looked at Allena's perfectly contoured face. She didn't feel a shred of anger. She felt a profound, almost clinical sense of pity. Allena was a toddler dancing blindfolded on the edge of a cliff.
Elisa tilted her head slightly.
"Good luck, Dr. Mills," Elisa said softly, her voice smooth and devoid of any emotion. "I sincerely hope this 'Faye' doesn't look at your proposal and realize it's a pile of absolute garbage."
Allena's face flushed red. Her eyes narrowed in fury."Excuse me? You jealous little-"
"Ms.Wilder."
A deep,respectful voice interrupted them.
The head of Aethel's executive security, a massive man with an earpiece, walked briskly out of the revolving doors. He stopped in front of Elisa and bowed his head slightly.
"The executive boardroom on the top floor is prepped and waiting for you," the security chief said.

Elisa didn't even glance back at Allena. She stepped past the stunned woman and walked through the doors, flanked by the security chief.
She walked directly to the private, glass-walled executive elevator. The doors opened immediately.
Allena stood frozen on the marble steps. She watched as Elisa stepped into the elevator-a lift strictly reserved for C-suite executives.
A cold, sickening knot of confusion formed in Allena's stomach as the doors slid shut. She shook her head, convincing herself the security guard had simply mistaken Elisa for someone important.
Inside the elevator, Elisa watched the floor numbers climb rapidly.
A slow, predatory smile curved her lips. The prey had just walked willingly into the slaughterhouse.
