Chapter 281

The doctor's words hit Elisa like a physical blow.

"...critical emergency...Chambers family just issued orders to halt his experimental treatments."

The air in her lungs turned to ice. She couldn't draw a breath. Her fingers, gripping the small clutch, went numb. The plush, patterned carpet of the hotel hallway seemned to tilt beneath her feet.

Grandfather.

The one person in the world who had ever shown her kindness. The reason she survived.

Behind her, the elevator doors finally slid shut with a soft, final thud. They had been delayed by a large hand forcing them back open just moments before.August hadn't stayed inside. The second he saw her freeze at the sight of the unknown caller ID,his instincts had propelled him out into the hallway. The sound of his expensive leather shoes sinking into the thick wool carpet was almost silent, but she felt his presence behind her, a wave of cold fury radiating from him. He had been standing right there, watching her for the entirety of her brief, devastating call.

He saw her rigidback, the phone still pressed to her ear though the line was dead. He saw the way her shoulders were locked, a statue of tension.

He completely misinterpreted it. A cruel, satisfied smirk touched the corner of his mouth. He thought she was terrified of him. Of his warning about the Thatchers.

"You should be scared, Elisa," his voice was a low growl, inches from her ear. "You think Thorne can protect you from a family like the Thatchers? You're a temporary shield. A toy."

Elisa's mind was a screaming void. She couldn't process his words. All she could see was her grandfather's face, frail and smiling, in his small West Virginia home.

"And you'd better remember." August continued, stepping around to stand in front of her, blocking her path, his sheer size an oppressive wall. "Until our divorce is finalized, you are still bound by the Chambers prenuptial agreement. Every clause."

He leaned in, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "If your little affair with Thorne damages the Group's interests, the punitive clauses will be triggered. I will take everything from you. Your Aethel shares, your patents. You will walk away with less than nothing. You will be erased."

The raw threat finally pierced the fog of her panic. Her survival instincts kicked in. She couldn't let him see her weakness. Not now. He would use it. He would use her grandfather.

With a jerky, mechanical movement, she lowered the phone, locked the screen, and shoved it deep into her clutch. The knuckles of her hand were white.

She lifted her head, her eyes, which a moment ago were wide with terror, now narrowed into chips of ice.

"You can't threaten me with things I earned,August," she said, her voice tight and brittle. "My shares are mine. My work is mine. They were never a gift from your family."

"Everything you have is because of my family!" he snarled, taking another step closer, invading her personal space.

The tension between them was a physical thing, a high-frequency hum in the air.

Just as he raised a hand, pointing a finger at her chest, another voice cut through the silence.

"That's enough,Chambers."

No.3

The voice wasn't loud, but it had the sharp, cutting

authority of a blade.

Both Elisa and August turned.

Thorne was walking toward them from the far end of the corridor. He moved with a calm, unhurried grace that was somehow more menacing than August's overt aggression. He wore a dark, impeccably tailored suit, and his expression was unreadable, but his eyes were fixed on August with a look of cold dismissal.

He didn't stop until he was standing beside Elisa. He ignored August completely.

"Are you alright, L?" he asked her, his voice softening just enough for her to hear.

Then, in a gesture of blatant ownership, he placed his hand on the small of her back**, careful to keep his touch light against her fragile spine**. It was a declaration. A shield. A claim.

August's eyes dropped to Thorne's hand on Elisa's waist. The air in his lungs seemed to freeze. A dark, possessive fury, primal and ugly, contorted his features. The vein in his temple began to pulse.

"L, we need to go," Elisa said, her voice urgent. She couldn't waste another second here. She had to get to New York. She turned to leave with Thorne,

her body finally obeying ner m111u 1010commands.

But the sudden movement, combined with the adrenaline crash and the ten-centimeter heels she wore, was a disastrous combination. The edge of her shoe caught on the polished marble inlay that bordered the carpet.

Her ankle twisted violently.

The abrupt, unnatural torque of her lower body sent a terrifying jolt straight up her spine. A sharp, agonized cry escaped her lips-not just for her ankle, but as her damaged L4 and L5 vertebrae screamed in violent protest. She lost her balance, her body lurching backward, sideways, into the empty space between the two men.

"Careful!" Thorne's hand shot out to grab her,but he was a half-step too far away. His fingers brushed against the sleeve of her dress, missing their mark.

August didn't think. He didn't plan. He reacted.

His body moved with an instinct he thought he had buried long ago. His arm shot out, a powerful, reflexive motion. He wrapped it securely around her waist, pulling her back from the brink.

Elisa slammed into his chest.

The impact was hard, knocking the last of the air from her lungs. More devastatingly, the violent whiplash of the collision tore through her lower back like a jagged blade. A blinding, paralyzing spike of agony radiated from her L4 and L5 discs, causing her vision to white out at the edges. Her entire respiratory system seemed to shut down as the horrific nerve pain hijacked her senses. For one disorienting second, the world was nothing but the solid wall of his body, the sickening throbbing in her spine, and the familiar, clean scent of cedar and cold ambition that clung to his clothes. It was the scent of her marriage. The scent of her prison.

His arm was a band of steel around her, holding her tight. He looked down, his gray-blue eyes wide, staring at her face, which was just inches from his.A flicker of something-not anger, but raw, unguarded panic-flashed in their depths. He had caught her. He was holding her.

It was a moment of pure, animal instinct, a crack in the carefully constructed walls between them.

And it was in that exact moment of charged, impossible stillness that a new sound echoed down the hallway. The frantic, hurried click-clack of high heels on marble.

Allena, her face a mask of tear-streaked fury, came running around the corner. She had clearly been chasing after August, unwilling to accept her defeat.

She stopped dead, her breath catching in a strangled gasp.

She saw them. August, with his arms wrapped tightly around Elisa, holding her in a possessive, intimate embrace.

"August!"

The name was a scream. A raw, piercing shriek of pure, undiluted jealousy that shattered the moment into a million pieces.

"What are you DOING?"

Allena's scream was like a bucket of ice water.

Elisa flinched as if she'd been burned. She attempted to shove against August's chest with all her strength, but the moment her core muscles engaged, a fresh wave of excruciating pain flared from her lumbar spine. Her legs nearly gave out under the spasm. Gasping for air through clenched teeth, she awkwardly stumbled back, desperate to pull away from his touch, away from the suffocating familiarity of his body.

Thorne was there instantly, his strong arm wrapping securely around her ribs, physically taking the brunt of her weight as she swayed.

August's arms fell to his sides, his hands frozen in mid-air for a second before he clenched them into fists. He looked from Elisa** whose face was now ashen and beaded with cold sweat** to the hysterical Allena, his expression hardening into a mask of cold disgust.

"I was stopping her from breaking her neck on my hotel's floor," he said, his voice dripping with condescending venom. "It would have ruined the carpet."

Allena wasn't listening. She rushed forward and latched onto August's arm, clinging to him like a drowning woman, her eyes, filled with hate, fixed on Elisa.

Elisa didn't even grant them a glance. Her world had narrowed to a single, desperate point of grief and physical agony. She grabbed Thorne's arm, her fingers digging into the expensive fabric of his suit to keepherself upright.

"L, please," her voice was a raw whisper, threaded with a tremor she couldn't control. "You have to help me. I have to get back to New York. Right now."

Thorne saw the genuine terror and the Staik, uaieiy concealed pain in her eyes. He didn't ask questions. He didn't hesitate.

"I'll handle it," he said, his voice a low, reassuring promise. He wrapped a supportive arm around her shoulders**, bearing nearly half of her body weight,** and began guiding her toward the private elevator at the end of the hall.

They had taken only three steps when Thorne paused. He turned his head, his gaze locking onto August with a cold, lethal calm.

"Chambers," he said, his voice soft but carrying the unmistakable weight of a warning. "Back off. She's made her choice."

August's jaw tightened. His hands balled into fists at his sides. But before he could respond, Elisa tugged at Thorne's arm, her patience exhausted.

"L.Now."

She pushed past August without looking at him, heavily leaning against Thorne's side to take the punishing pressure off her lower back. Her shoulder brushed his as she walked away-a final, dismissive gesture that said more than any words could. Despite the grinding, white-hot pain shooting through her spine with every uneven

step, she didn't stop. She didn't look back.

August stood frozen, Allena still clinging to his arm.He watched Elisa lean into Thorne's embrace, mistaking her physical reliance for pure affection, watched them walk away together. A cold, heavy feeling, something more than anger, more than jealousy, began to spread through his chest.

He had threatened her. He had tried to break her.

And in the end, he had only pushed her further into the arms of another man.
