Chapter 229

The art closet smelled of dried clay and cheap acrylic paint.
Elisa gently pushed Kayden off her lap. She held her daughter's face between her hands, her thumbs brushing over the soft cheeks.
"Listen to me very carefully," Elisa said, her voice steady but urgent. "When we go back out there, you hold my hand. You do not let go. You do not talk to anyone else.Understand?"
Kayden nodded her head, her blue eyes wide and serious.
Elisa stood up. She reached deep into her leather tote bag and pulled out her secondary, heavily encrypted smartphone. She bypassed the security lock and dialed a number she had memorized. It was the encrypted, direct line to Harvey Vance, the ruthless, top-tier corporate lawyer she had exclusively retained to handle the final execution of the divorce documents.

The phone rang three times before Harvey's sharp, professional voice answered. "Ms. Wilder. I wasn't expecting to hear from you until tomorrow."
Elisa didn't bother with pleasantries. "Harvey. I just had a close encounter with August. He is getting suspicious. I need absolute, one-hundred-percent confirmation that the sealed separation injunction is ready."
There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of a keyboard clacking.
"The paperwork is flawless, Ms. Wilder," Harvey assured her, his tone purely professional. "While the final divorce remains locked in Geneva, the immediate custody and separation injunction is ready. The judge has already reviewed the sealed petition. His electronic signature will automatically stamp the document at exactly 9:00 AM tomorrow."
Elisa closed her eyes, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "And once it's signed?"

"Once the ink is dry under seal," Harvey stated, "the legal firewall is activated. August Chambers will have zero legal standing to investigate your finances, your
associates, or your 'goddaughter.' You will be a free woman."
"I will be atthe clerk's window at 8:55 AM," Elisa said. She hung up the phone and shoved it back into her bag.
For the next two hours, Elisa and Kayden navigated the psychological evaluation rooms. Elisa played the role of the attentive, slightly anxious godmother perfectly. She answered the child psychologists'questions with flawless, pre-rehearsed responses, leaving absolutely no red flags in Kayden's file.
By noon, the mandatory event was over.

Elisa gripped Kayden's hand and walked quickly out of the main building, avoiding the central lawn and sticking to the paved pathways near the perimeter fence.
As they approached the VIP parking lot, Elisa's footsteps slowed.
Parked in the loading zone was August's massive, custom black Rolls-Royce Phantom. The uniformed driver was holding the heavy rear door open.
August stood by the car. He was looking straight ahead, his face an unreadable mask. Allena was leaning heavily against his shoulder, laughing loudly at something Tate had said. Tate was holding a cheap plastic participation trophy, jumping up and down on the pavement.
To any passing observer, they were the picture of extreme wealth and domestic happiness.

Elisa stood in the deep shadow of a large oak tree. She watched them. She searched her own heart, waiting for the familiar sting of betrayal, the burn of jealousy.
There was nothing. The emotional cavity in her chest was completely empty.
She looked at August's handsome, arrogant face and felt only a profound, overwhelming sense of relief.
Go to your hotel room, Elisa thought, her eyes cold.Drink your champagne. Sleep with your mistress.Enjoy your last night of power.
Because tomorrow, she was taking her freedom. And the day after that, she was going to detonate the financial bomb that would burn his entire empire to

the ground.
The driver closed the heavy door. The Rolls-Royce glided silently out of the parking lot, disappearing down the tree-lined street.
Elisa exhaled a long, shaky breath. She walked to her Maybach, strapped Kayden securely into the leather car seat, and got behind the wheel.
As she drove into the heavy Manhattan traffic, she looked at the bright city skyline. The crushing weight of the last seven years felt like it was finally lifting off her shoulders. The nightmare was almost over.
She had no idea that the gears of fate had already shifted, and the real nightmare hadn't even begun.
