Chapter 212

No.1

The digital clock on the vanity mirror flashed 7:50PM.

The temperature inside the penthouse felt like a morgue. Elisa sat perfectly still on the velvet stool. She stared at her own reflection in the glass. The burgundy dress wrapped around her like a heavy, expensive straitjacket. Her eyes were dark, empty pits.

The heavy door of the master bedroom clicked open.

August walked out. He had changed into a perfectly tailored, pitch-black evening tuxedo. The sharp lines of the suit emphasized his broad shoulders. He radiated the cold, untouchable power of a billionaire predator.

He walked slowly across the thick carpet and stopped right behind Elisa.

He looked at her reflection in the mirror. His dark eyes flickered with a complicated, heavy emotion he refused to name. He reached his large hand into the inner pocket of his tuxedo jacket.

He pulled out a small, worn velvet box. It looked incredibly old, completely out of place against his modern, expensive suit.

He placed the box on the glass surface of the vanity, right in front of Elisa.

August reached out and flipped the lid open.

Resting on the faded white silk was a heavy, antique silver locket. The metal was covered in intricate, hand-carved floral patterns. It was tarnished in the corners, carrying the unmistakable weight of history.

Elisa's breath physically stopped in her throat. Her pupils dilated massively.

It was her grandmother's locket.①

When Elisa was seventeen years old, Allena's mother, Rosalind, had violently ripped this exact necklace from Elisa's neck. Rosalind had pawned it for cash to buy Allena a designer prom dress. Elisa had spent ten years searching pawn shops across West Virginia and New York, but she had never found it.

Elisa's hands began to shake. She reached out and snatched the box of the glass. Her cold fingertips traced the rough, carved silver. The metal bit into

her skin.

August stood tall behind her, looking down with a distinct look of arrogant satisfaction.

"I tracked it down through a private European collector," August stated. His voice was smooth, carrying the heavy tone of a man granting a massive favor. "It cost me a significant amount of capital to acquire it. Happy birthday."④

He waited. He expected her to break. He expected the tears, the gratitude, the sudden softening of her rigid spine. He expected her to look up at him and realize that he was the only man'who could give her the world.

Elisa slowly lifted her head.

She looked at his reflection in the mirror. There were no tears. There was no gratitude. There was only a freezing, surgical clarity.

She knew exactly how August Chambers operated. He never spent capital without expecting a massive return on investment.

Elisa snapped the velvet box shut with a loud, sharp crack.

"You bought this to buy my silence," Elisa said. Her voice was a flat, dead monotone. "You are throwing

me a shiny piece of metal so you don't feel guilty when you leave my dinner table tonight to go screw Allena on the beach."

August's face turned the color of ash. The arrogant satisfaction vanished, instantly replaced by a violent, ugly flush of rage.

"You ungrateful bitch," August hissed, his hands curling into massive fists at his sides. He hated that she could see straight through his psychological armor. "I spent months looking for that."

Before he could say another word, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the thick glass of the penthouse windows.

Bright, violent streaks of red and gold fire ripped across the dark Miami sky. The hotel had launched a massive fireworks display over the ocean to celebrate the summit.

The sudden noise made the floorboards vibrate.

August's jaw locked. He reached down, his large hand clamping brutally around Elisa's thin wrist.

"We are going outside," August ordered, his voice barely audible over the explosions.

He dragged her up from the stool. Elisa tried to dig her heels into the carpet, but the fever had drained

her muscles. She was completely powerless against his physical strength. He pulled her across the living room and shoved the heavy glass balcony doors open.

The humid ocean air hit them instantly. August dragged her to the edge of the glass railing. The sky above them was a chaotic war zone of exploding light and booming sound.

The flashing colors illuminated August's furious, rigid face. He stared out at the fire, his chest heaving, desperately trying to force the situation back under his control.

Suddenly, a different kind of noise cut through the explosions.

It was a violent, heavy, rhythmic smashing sound.

Someone was kicking the solid oak front door of the penthouse.

The sound was so loud and aggressive it echoed all the way out to the balcony.

"Elisa!"

No.5

The muffled, drunken, enraged roar of Preston Vance bled through the heavy wood.

"Open this damn door! You think you and

Chambers can play me for a fool? You think you can use my three hundred million as a joke?" Preston screamed, his fists pounding against the wood like sledgehammers.

Preston had spent the entire afternoon stewing over the humiliating phone call. His massive ego couldn't handle being dismissed by August. He had found their room number and come up to tear the place apart.

On the balcony, August's entire body went completely rigid. The blood drained from his face.

If Preston Vance broke into this room right now,he would see August and Elisa together. The narrative August had built-that he hated his wife-would shatter. Worse, Preston would run straight to the Wall Street Journal with the scandal.

August dropped Elisa's wrist. He spun around and sprinted back into the living room, heading straight for the internal phone to call hotel security.

Elisa did not freeze. Her brain processed the variables in a fraction of a second.

She moved with terrifying speed. She ran past August, ignoring the burning pain in her spine, and reached the front entryway first.

She slapped her hand against the digital securit panel on the wall. She hit the master override button. The heavy electronic deadbolts inside the door retracted with a loud, mechanical clunk.

Elisa turned her head toward the door. She raisec her voice, cutting through the noise.

"The door is unlocked, Mr. Vance," Elisa yelled.

Outside, the pounding stopped. The heavy brass door handle began to turn.

August's eyes widened in absolute, apocalyptic horror.

He lunged forward like a wild animal. He slammed his massive shoulder against the thick wood of the door just as Preston pushed from the outside. The door groaned under the competing weight.

August spun around and grabbed Elisa by the throat. He slammed her backward against the expensive wallpaper. He pinned her there with his left forearm, while his entire right side pressed desperately against the door to keep it shut.

"Are youout of your mind?" August roared, his face inches from hers. The veins in his forehead were bulging, pulsing with frantic blood.

Elisa's back screamed in agony as she hit the wall.

She gasped for air, but she did not look away. She stared directly into his panicked, terrified eyes.

A slow, chilling smile spread across her face.

"Let him in, August," Elisa whispered, her voice dripping with pure poison. "Let the whole world see the great billionaire holding his wife hostage in a hotel room."

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Preston began throwing his heavy body against the outside of the door. The wood shuddered violently against August's back. August gritted his teeth, his expensive tuxedo shoes slipping slightly on the marble floor as he fought to hold the barrier.

Then, a new sound echoed from the hallway outside.

It was the sharp, rhythmic clicking of stiletto heels.

"Preston? What are you doing at August's door?"

The high, grating voice of Allena pierced through the wood.

August's heart completely stopped beating.
