Chapter 199

The frantic beeping of Tate's heart monitor finally settled into a steady, rhythmic pulse. The Epinephrine had worked. The boy's airway was opening.
But the atmosphere inside the VIP room was suffocating.
August stared at the blood dripping from Cyprian's neck. The sight of his most loyal friend taking a physical attack meant for Elisa sent a violent shockwave through his brain. A dark, ugly surge of betrayal and possessive rage erupted in his chest.
He shoved past the medical equipment and marched directly up to Elisa. His massive frame blocked out the light, casting a heavy, threatening shadow over her.
"What the hell did you do to him?" August snarled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble. "What kind of manipulative psychological game are you playing to make my friends bleed for you?"
Elisa did not step back. She tilted her head up,meeting his furious gaze with eyes that were completely, terrifyingly dead.

"I didn't do anything, August," Elisa said, her voice dropping the temperature in the room to freezing."Maybe even your attack dogs are starting to realize they are taking orders from a psychopath."
Allena heard the word psychopath. She saw August's attention shifting. She needed to regain control of the narrative immediately.
She backed away from Cyprian's blood and pulled her phone from her designer bag. Her hands were shaking, but her eyes burned with a vicious, triumphant light.
"I have the direct number for the managing editor of the Wall Street Journal," Allena announced, her voice shrill and echoing off the tile walls.
August turned his head, his brow furrowing. "Allena, put the phone down."
"No!" Allena cried, pointing at Elisa. "She tried to kill my brother with her illegal Al drugs! I am calling the press right now. I am going to expose Aethel Intelligence for conducting unauthorized, lethal human trials on children!"

The threat hung in the air like a live grenade.
If that headline hit the wire-even if it was a complete lie-the SEC would immediately freeze Aethel's operations. The two-hundred-million-dollar funding round would vanish. The upcoming IPO would be dead on arrival. It was corporate extortion on a massive scale.
"Unless," Allena sneered, her true motive finally surfacing through the fake tears. "Unless she immediately resigns from Aethel and signs over every single patent associated with Project Chiron to my company. Then, I won't press charges."
She wanted the tech. She wanted the money. She was willing to murder her own brother to get it.
August's jaw locked. He looked at Allena, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his face. This was reckless. This was insane. A dark flash of displeasure crossed his eyes, but then a cold realization settled in his mind: Allena's psychotic plan, while crude and unhinged, gave him the absolute perfect leverage. It was the ultimate opportunity to finally crush Elisa's newfound independence and force her permanently back under his control. He turned back to Elisa.
He adjusted his cuffs, adopting the posture of a benevolent savior offering a lifeline to a drowning rat.

"You are cornered, Elisa," August said, his tone dripping with arrogant condescension. "If she makes that call, you go to federal prison. But if you admit you made a mistake with the IV, I will have my legal team step in. I will pay Allena off. I will keep you out of a cell."
He waited for her to crumble. He waited for the tears, the panic, the desperate plea for his protection.
Elisa looked at the man who was offering to "save"her from a crime his mistress had committed.
Slowly, Elisa took one step backward. The physical distance was small, but the psychological chasm it created was infinite.
Her face smoothed out into a mask of absolute
robotic calm. She took one deep, centering breath, her mind instantly shifting from defense to a cold, calculated counter-offensive.

"To protect the integrity of Aethel Intelligence and the upcoming IPO," Elisa announced, her voice ringing clear and loud enough for every nurse in the room to hear. "I am voluntarily stepping down from my position as Senior Technical Advisor, effective immediately, pending an independent investigation."
Allena gasped in pure, ecstatic triumph. She had won.
August, however, felt a sudden, violent drop in his stomach. Elisa's compliance was too fast. Too cold. There was no fear in her eyes.
Elisa turned her gaze to Allena. The ice in her eyes sharpened into invisible blades.
"But I will not sign over a single line of code," Elisa stated, her voice slicing through the room. "And I will use every legal resource at my disposal to ensure the person who actually poisoned that child rots in a federal penitentiary."
She turned back to August.

"As for your help, Mr. Chambers," Elisa whispered, the formal title hitting him like a slap to the face."Save your money. You are going to need it for her bail."
Elisa turned on her heel. She walked out of the hospital room, her spine perfectly straight, her
heels clicking rhythmically against the linoleum.
Cyprian watched her walk away, his hand still pressed to his bleeding neck. The strange, overwhelming urge to follow her flared in his chest, confusing and terrifying him.
August stood frozen by the hospital bed. He had expected to break her. Instead, she had looked at him like he was completely irrelevant. A wave of pure, impotent rage crashed over him. He turned and slammed his fist violently into the drywall, the impact cracking the plaster.
Out in the hallway, Elisa walked until she reached a blind spot in the security camera coverage.

She leaned heavily against the cold wall, her chest heaving as the adrenaline began to crash. She pulled out her encrypted phone and dialed Alastair.
"Alastair," Elisa said, her voice shaking slightly before solidifying into steel. "Change of plans. They used the media threat. I just publicly resigned."
Alastair roared through the phone. "What? I will bury that woman! I am calling my lawyers-"
"No," Elisa interrupted, a slow, dark, terrifying smile spreading across her face. "Don't call the lawyers.
The fish just swallowed the hook. Now, we reel her in and gut her."
