Chapter 194

August ended the call. He stood on the freezing sidewalk, his phone gripped so tightly the screen threatened to crack. His jaw was locked, the muscles ticking visibly beneath his skin. The cold air did nothing to cool the violent, chaotic fire burning in his chest.
Cyprian and Devon walked out of the restaurant doors, their expensive coats draped over their shoulders. They looked at August's rigid posture, then at Allena, who was standing a few feet away, looking like a kicked dog.
Cyprian pulled a pristine silk handkerchief from his breast pocket. He stepped up to August and held it out, gesturing to the few drops of red wine that had splashed onto August's cuff.
"August," Cyprian said, his voice dripping with aristocratic condescension. "Tell me you are not actually letting that manipulative bitch get inside your head. It is beneath you."
August slowly turned his head. His eyes were dark, dangerous slits. "Explain."
Cyprian let out a dry, mocking laugh. He adjusted his lapels, adopting the tone of a man explaining a simple math problem to a child.

"I saw them through the glass before you ran out,"Cyprian said smoothly. "That little girl? | recognize
her.I heard Devon mention that Jewel Gilmore has a daughter around that age, and I saw a photo on her social media last month. She is always clinging to Jewel."
August froze. The name hit his brain like a bucket of ice water. He remembered the charity visit. He remembered the little girl with the blue eyes standing next to Elisa's loud, obnoxious best friend.
The terrifying, inexplicable physical pull he had felt in his blood just minutes ago suddenly collided with this new, logical piece of information.
Devon let out a loud, cruel snort. He crossed his arms, his Wall Street risk-assessor brain immediately constructing a narrative.
"Are you kidding me?" Devon laughed, shaking his head. "It's so obvious. Elisa is completely unhinged because you threw her out. She knows you bought this place out for Allena tonight. So what does she do? She borrows her friend's kid."

Devon stepped closer, his voice full of vicious certainty. "She drags Alastair Cromwell here, parades a fake 'happy family' right in front of the window, all just to trigger you. She's trying to prove she doesn't need you. It's pathetic."
Cyprian nodded in agreement. "It is actually quite sad. A barren woman who can't even give you an heir, renting a child for the night to fill the void and play mind games. You shouldn't be angry,August. You should pity her."
The words barren and renting a child echoed in
August's ears.
The tight, agonizing knot in his chest began to loosen, though a dark, lingering shadow remained. He forced himself to accept their airtight, cruel logic, desperately needing to crush the impossible,world-shattering thought before it could take root. And yet, a cold sliver of doubt quietly festered, waiting for Simon's report.
August's breathing slowed. The wild panic in his eyes was replaced by a cold, hard sheet of absolute arrogance.

Allena saw the shift in his demeanor. She immediately recognized her opening.
She stepped forward, her face twisted into a mask of deep, sorrowful pity. She gently placed her hand on August's sleeve, being careful not to grip too hard this time.
"August," Allena whispered, her voice trembling perfectly. "My sister... she is so sick in the head. She just can't accept that we love each other. To use a child as a prop just to hurt you? She needs psychiatric help, not your anger."
Allena drove the nails of the 'crazy ex-wife'narrative deep into the coffin.
August looked down at Allena's sympathetic face.
He thought about Elisa's cold smile through the glass. The physical shock he felt earlier was completely rewritten in his brain as a reaction to

her sheer, psychotic audacity.
He let out a short, harsh breath. He snatched the silk handkerchief from Cyprian's hand, wiped the wine from his cuff, and tossed the stained silk directly into a nearby trash can.
"Let her play her psychotic games," August said, his voice returning to its normal, freezing baseline."I want to see how long Cromwell tolerates a mental patient."
His phone buzzed in his pocket.
August pulled it out. It was a secure text from Simon.
Preliminary check complete. Subject is Kayden Gilmore. Legal guardian records are under heavy encryption, but all medical and residential ties point directly to Jewel Gilmore's estate in Long Island.

August stared at the name. Gilmore.
The final, heavy iron door slammed shut in his mind. The child belonged to Jewel. His friends were right. It was all a cheap, theatrical stunt.
He locked his phone and shoved it back into his pocket. He turned to the maître d', who was still trembling by the door.
"Bring a fresh bottle of the '82 Lafite," August commanded, wrapping his arm around Allena's waist and pulling her tight against his side. "We are not letting a desperate woman ruin our dinner."
Cyprian and Devon smirked at each other and followed him back inside. They were completely,
utterly convinced of their own brilliance, entirely unaware that their arrogant logic had just perfectly secured the lock on the greatest secret of August Chambers' life.
