Chapter 189

The low hum of the air conditioning seemed to amplifythe silence in the room.

Elisa did not relax her posture. She kept her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her eyes narrowed into suspicious slits. She looked at August not as a husband, but as a con artist about to pitch a scam."I'm listening," Elisa said, her voice flat.

August walked over to the coffee table. He picked up a slim, unmarked manila folder that Warren had left behind. He held it up.

"The Family Trust Board monitors public records and media," August explained, his tone shifting into the clinical cadence ofa CEO outlining a merger."They look for court filings. They look for press releases. They do not have access to sealed, international legal vaults."

He tossed the folder onto the glass table. It slid to a stop right in front of Elisa.

"Inside that folder is a binding, absolute divorce decree and a complete division of assets," August said. "We sign it tonight. In the eyes of the law, between you and me, this marriage is dead the second the ink dries."

Elisa frowned, her eyes darting to the folder. "If we sign it, the court records it. Germaine will know by

tomorrow morning."

"No, she won't," August countered smoothly."Because Warren is going to take those signed documents, fly to Geneva tomorrow, and lock them in a Swiss bank escrow vault. They will not be filed with the New York Supreme Court for exactly three hundred and sixty-five days."

Elisa stared at him, the sheer audacity of the legal loophole dawning on her.

"A delayed filing," August confirmed. "For the next year,we will engage in a public showmance. We will attend the Al Summit. We will smile for the cameras. We will give the Board the illusion of stability until the stock recovers and Allena's...legal issues are resolved."

Elisa let out a harsh, incredulous laugh.

"You want me to be your human shield," Elisa sneered. "You want me to parade around for a year, pretending to love the man who destroyed my life, just so your mistress doesn't have to face the consequences of her own actions."

She stood up, ignoring the shooting pain in her spine.

"No," Elisa said with absolute finality. "I am not doing it. Let the trust freeze. Let the stock burn. I am done playing your games."

She turned toward the door.

"Wait," August said. His voice wasn't a command;it was a sharp, desperate strike.

He reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. He pulled out a heavy, cream-colored envelope. He tossed it onto the coffee table.

No.4

"Open it," August said.

Elisa stopped. She looked at the envelope. Her instincts screamed at her to walk away, but the heavy, expensive paper drew her in. She walked back to the table, picked up the envelope, and pulled out the single sheet of paper inside.

It was a legal deed.

Her eyes scanned the bold print at the top.Transfer of Controlling Interest: Ainsworth Antique Gallery.

She looked at the bottom of the page. There,in stark black ink, were the fresh, notarized signatures of Arthur Sinclair and Allena Sinclair. The only signature missing was hers.

Elisa's breath caught in her throat. Her fingers trembled slightly against the thick paper.

"They signed it an hour ago," August said, his voice low and triumphant. "I leveraged a Sinclair debt obligation to force Arthur's hand. The gallery is yours, free and clear. The trust cannot touch it."

He took a step closer, his eyes locking onto hers.

"Sign the secret divorce. Play the devoted wife in public for one year," August demanded. "And the gallery is yours. Refuse, and I will tear that deed up right now, and Arthur will auction off your grandfather's life by the weekend."

It was the ultimate, filthy extortion. He was holding her mother's memory hostage to buy his own salvation.

Elisa stared at the deed. She saw her grandfather's face. She saw the antique clock that used to sit in her mother's room. She felt the heavy, crushing weight of the carbon-fiber brace around her ribs,a reminder of what fighting himn head-on cost her physically.

She slowly lowered the paper. She looked at August. The freezing void inside her expanded, swallowing the last of her pride, converting it into pure, tactical ice.

"One year," Elisa said, her voice a hollow, terrifying whisper."I will smile for the cameras.I will play the perfect Mrs. Chambers."

August let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. A flicker of relief crossed his face.

"But," Elisa continued, her eyes flashing with a lethal, predatory light. "In private, you do not exist to me. You will not speak to me unless it is for the cameras. You will not touch me. You will stay ten feet away from me at all times."

August's jaw tightened at the absolute disgust in her voice, but he nodded. "Agreed. I have no desire to interfere with your private life."

Elisa dropped the deed onto the table. She

reached for the manila folder containing the secret divorce agreement.

"Let's get this over with," she said, pulling the thick stack of paper out. She was making a deal with the devil, but she knew something the devil didn't.

One year was more than enough time to build a bomb big enough to blow his entire empire to dust.
