Chapter 186

No.1

The silence in the penthouse living room was heavy, thick with the smell of expensive whiskey and impending violence.

Warren Beckett cleared his throat. He tapped the thick stack of legal documents he had just placed on the glass coffee table, sliding it an inch closer to Elisa.

"This is the proposed settlement agreement,"Warren said, his voice shifting into a rapid, emotionless legal cadence. "My client is prepared to offer a one-time,tax-free alimony payment of one hundred milion dollars, plus the deed to a luxury condominium on the Upper East Side."

Elisa's eyebrows twitched upward.

One hundred million dollars. It was a staggering sum. It was nearly seven times what the original contract stipulated. August was throwing a mountain of cash at her, desperate to crush her into submission.

"However," Warren continued, tapping a manicured finger against the thick document, "this payment is contingent upon your signature on a comprehensive, lifetime Non-Disclosure Agreement."

Warren began to list the terms. They were barbaric.

"You will publicly state that the divorce was initiated by you due to 'irreconcilable differences.'You will assume full public responsibility for the

dissolution of the marriage. You are permanently barred from mentioning Allena Sinclair's name in any public or private forum. You will surrender all digital and physical copies of any recordings, videos,or documents pertaining to Ms. Sinclair or the Chambers family."

Warren paused, looking directly at Elisa.

"If you violate any clause of this NDA, you will forfeit the entire settlement and be liable for three hundred million dollars in punitive damages."

Warren finished speaking. He folded his hands on the table, looking at Elisa with the smug certainty of a man who believed that everyone had a price, and one hundred million dollars was more than enough to buy a nurse's soul.

August leaned back against the leather sofa. He picked up his whiskey glass, a faint, arrogant smirk playing on his lips. He was waiting for her to break.Waiting for her to grab the pen and thank him for making her rich.

Elisa did not look at the document. She kept her eyes fixed on August.

Slowly, a sound escaped her lips. It was a soft, dry laugh.

The laugh grew louder, echoing off the high glass windows of the penthouse. It was a sound of pure, unfiltered mockery.

August's smirk vanished. His jaw tightened. "What is so funny?"

Elisa leaned forward. The movement sent a spike of pain through her back, but she ignored it. Her eyes were burning with a cold, blue fire.

"One hundred million dollars," Elisa said, her voice dripping with venom. "That isn't alimony, August.

That is hush money. You are using your company's cash flow to cover up your mistress's federal crimes and your own pathetic infidelity."

August's hand gripped his glass so hard the crystal groaned. "Watch your mouth."

"You are paying me to take the bullet for a lying whore," Elisa continued, her voice rising, slicing through the room like a scalpel. "It's touching, really. The great August Chambers, brought to his knees, emptying his pockets to protect a woman who faked a fall down the stairs."

August slammed his glass down on the table. The amber liquid splashed over the rim.

Elisa did not flinch. She reached out and picked up the heavy gold Montblanc pen Warren had placed next to the contract. She rolled it slowly between her fingers.

"There is a fatal flaw in your generous offer," Elisa said, her tone dropping to a lethal whisper.

She slammed the heavy gold pen down on top of the contract with a sharp CRACK.

"The gallery," Elisa demanded. "The Ainsworth

Antique Gallery. It is not listed in the asset transfer."Warren immediately intervened. "The gallery is currently under the jurisdiction of the Sinclair Family Trust. It is a separate legal entity and is not subject to marital asset division."

Elisa ignored the lawyer. She stared directly into August's furious eyes.

"You gave it to them," Elisa said. "You waived the recourse. You hand it back to me tonight, or I walk out that door, and tomorrow morning, I sit down for a live interview on CNN with the video of Allena's little stunt playing on a loop behind me."

August shot up from the sofa. His massive frame towered over the coffee table, casting a dark shadow over Elisa. The veins in his neck were pulsing.

"I cannot give you the gallery!" August roared, his voice shaking the glass windows. "The Sinclair trust locked it down this morning! I don't have the legal authority to transfer the deed!"

Elisa tilted her head up, meeting his rage with absolute, freezing calm.

"That sounds like a 'you' problem, August," she whispered. "No gallery, no NDA. And this pile of paper isn't even fit to wipe my shoes."

August leaned over the table, his face inches from hers. His breath was hot and smelled of alcohol. He looked like he was about to reach across the glass and physically strangle her.

Before he could move, a sharp, electronic sound shattered the tension.

No.7

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.

It was the main door's security keypad. Someone was entering a code.

August froze. He turned his head toward the vestibule. He had locked the elevator. No one was supposed to have access.

A heavy, metallic CLUNK echoed through the penthouse as the master deadbolt was electronically disengaged.

The massive oak door was pushed open.
