Chapter 184

A nurse rushed into the room, her face pale as she administered a sedative into Elisa's IV line, her voice a soothing murmur meant to calm a panicked patient. The heart monitor's frantic shrieking slowly subsided into a steady, rhythmic beep. The hospital bed linens were changed in tense, suffocating silence.

When the medical staff finally left, the room felt like a tomb.

Elisa lay propped up against the pillows. The heavy painkillers the nurse had injected into her IV line were beginning to dull the screaming agony in her spine, reducing it to a deep, throbbing ache.

Her eyes were completely dead. The freezing void in her chest had crystallized into a weapon. -

"Jewel," Elisa said. Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper, devoid of any inflection."The laptop."

Jewel hesitated, looking at the fresh bandage on Elisa's hand. But she saw the look in Elisa's eyes-a look of absolute, apocalyptic resolve. Jewel reached into her oversized tote bag and pulled out the heavy,military-grade encrypted laptop.

She placed it carefully on Elisa'slap.

Elisa opened the screen. Her fingers, though slightly trembling from the adrenaline crash, moved

across the keyboard with lethal precision.

She bypassed the standard internet protocols. She booted up a secure Tor browser and accessed a highly restricted, anonymous drop node used by the investigative journalists at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

She opened a new, encrypted message window.

She attached the high-definition video file. The video that clearly showed Allena standing at the top of the stairs, looking around, and deliberately throwing herself backward. The video that proved the entire assault was a fabricated, malicious lie.①

She attached the server logs proving Allena's academic fraud at JHU.

She attached the audio file of Meredith Hastings confessing to the conspiracy.

She typed a single sentence in the subject line: The Vanguard Medical Fraud and the Chambers Cover -up.

All she had to do was press the enter key. The files would instantly propagate across hundreds of secure servers. Allena would face federal perjury charges by morning. The Chambers Group, already bleeding from the short-sell attack, would suffer a catastrophic, fatal blow to its reputation.

Elisa's finger hovered over the enter key.

The heavy wooden door of the hospital room suddenly exploded inward.

The lock shattered, the metal plate tearing out of

the doorframe with a deafening crack. The door slammed violently against the wall.

Simon had been frantically monitoring the hospital's internal secure network and flagged a massive, encrypted data packet being prepped for an external dark web drop from this exact IP address. He had alerted his boss just in time.

August Chambers stood in the doorway.

He looked like a man who had just walked through a hurricane. His suit jacket was gone. His tie was missing. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and burning with a frantic, desperate energy. Simon, his chief of staff, stood behind him, looking terrified.

August's eyes instantly locked onto the laptop resting on Elisa's legs. He saw the dark screen. He saw her finger hovering over the keyboard.①

He moved with terrifying speed.

He crossed the room in three massive strides. He lunged forward and slammed his heavy hand down on the top of the laptop screen, forcing it shut with a violent crack.

The edge of the screen caught Elisa's knuckles,

painfully pinning her fingers against the keyboard.August leaned over the bed. He planted his hands on the mattress on either side of Elisa's hips, physically trapping her in the shadow of his broad

shoulders.

"Are you insane?" August roared, his voice vibrating in her chest. "Are you trying to drag my entire

family into a federal indictment?"

Elisa did not flinch. She did not pull her trapped hand away. She looked up into his furious eyes, her own gaze as cold and sharp as broken glass.

"Your family?" Elisa sneered, her voice dripping with absolute disgust. "You gave my grandfather's gallery to a whore to keep her from crying. You don't have a family, August. You have a cartel."

August's jaw locked. A flash of intense irritation crossed his eyes-she knew already. He hadn't expected her to find out about the asset transfer so quickly. He instantly suppressed the annoyance beneath a mask of cold, ruthless authority. He did not deny it.

He slowly straightened up, removing the pressure from her hand. He took a step back, adjusting his cuffs, transforming back into the untouchable CEO.

"You want to play games with my company,"August said, his voice dropping to a lethal, business -like monotone. "Fine. But I am ending this right now. I am cutting the cancer out."

He turned and snapped his fingers at Simon.

Simon stepped forward, his hands shaking slightly, and handed August a thick, black legal folder.

August tossed the folder onto the bed. It landed heavily on top of the closed laptop. The gold crest of Chambers Legal was embossed on the cover.

"You have been begging for a divorce," August stated coldly. "You have it."

Elisa stared at the folder. Her heart gave a single, painful throb, then went completely numb.

"Tonight. Eight o'clock," August commanded."Tribeca penthouse. Bring whatever pathetic lawyer you can find. We are initiating the final settlement proceedings. You will sign the papers, you will hand over every copy of those videos, and you will disappear."

He leaned in slightly, his eyes narrowing. "If you do not show up, or if you hit send on that computer, I will make sure you spend the rest of your life fighting criminal extortion charges in a federal courtroom."

Elisa looked at the man she had loved for seven years. He was rushing the divorce not because he wanted to be free, but because he needed to legally sever her from his assets before the scandal hit, and to protect Allena from the fallout.

It was the ultimate, cowardly betrayal.

Elisa slowly pulled her bruised hand out from under the laptop. She rested it on top of the black folder.

She looked up at August. A slow, chillingsmile touched the corners of her mouth.

"Eight o'clock," Elisa said, her voice perfectly calm, perfectly dead. "I'll be there. I hope your checkbook has enough zeros."

No.7

August stared at her. He expected tears. He expected screaming. Her absolute, freezing compliance sent a sudden, irrational spike of

unease down his spine.

He turned on his heel and marched out of the room,Simon trailing closely behind.

Elisa sat in the quiet room, her hand resting on the divorce papers. The battle for survival was over.

The war of annihilation had just begun.2
