Chapter 138

No.1

The next morning, the air outside Elite Prep School was crisp and cold, smelling of old money and manicured hedges.

Elisa walked up the grand stone steps, a warrior marching into battle. She held Kayden's small hand in hers. Jewel walked beside them, her expression a thundercloud of protective fury.

Kayden was dressed in a pretty blue dress, her hair tied back with a matching ribbon. She clutched her original,now-voided, admission letter in her other hand like a holy relic. She was vibrating with a mixture of excitement and confusion.

"Mommy, why do we have to come back?" she asked, her small voice full of innocence. "Don't they know I'm coming?"

Elisa squeezed her hand, her heart aching."They do,sweetie. But sometimes, grown-ups get confused. We just have to remind them. We might have to wait a little bit, but Mommy will handle everything."

They entered the imposing, wood-paneled administration buildng. The principal's secretary, a woman with a tight bun and a tighter smile, looked up and physically flinched when she saw Elisa.

"The Head of School is in a meeting," the secretary said, her voice stiff. "You can wait over there."

Elisa didn't sit. She stood in the center of the waiting area, a silent, immovable statue of maternal rage. Jewel stood with her, arms crossed. Kayden, sensing the tension, pressed closer to Elisa's leg.Ten minutes later, the heavy oak door to the principal's office swung open.

Mrs. Gable, the Head of School, emerged, her face wreathed in a sycophantic, fawning smile. And behind her, standing like the lord and lady of the manor, were August and Allena.

"...and your incredibly generous donation will allow us to completely refurbish the science wing, Mr.Chambers," Mrs. Gable was gushing. "You and Ms.Mills are truly the guardian angels of this institution."August nodded, a small, arrogant smile on his face. This was his world. A world where money bought gratitude, access, and obedience. Allena clung to his arm, her face glowing with the smug, triumphant look of a victor.

Then they saw Elisa.

Mrs. Gable's smile froze on her face, then curdled into an expression of cold, professional annoyance.Allena's eyes widened in surprise, and then, a spark of pure, malicious delight lit them up. This was a bonus. A chance to rub Elisa's nose in her defeat.

"Well, well,Elisa," Allena said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness, loud enough for the entire office to hear. "And your little... niece. What a surprise. Are you here for a tour?"

Kayden flinched at the word 'niece' and hid behind Elisa's leg, her small face a mask of confusion and hurt.

Elisa gently pushed her daughter behind her, shielding her. She looked at Allena, her eyes like black ice.

"We're here to collect what belongs to us," Elisa said, her voice dangerously calm. "Kayden's rightful spot in this school."

Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her fawning demeanor replaced by a stern, bureaucratic mask. "Ms. Wilder,as I believe my office explained, there was a system error. We are prepared to offer a full refund of your application fee and..."

"I don't want a refund," Elisa cut her off, her voice sharp as a razor. "I want an explanation. Why was Kayden's spot-a spot she earned-given to Tate Mills?"

August had been watching this with bored detachment. Now he stepped forward, his presence sucking the air out of the room.

"Mrs. Gable," he said, his voice a low, rumbling command that ignored Elisa completely. "I believe we had an understanding regarding the Chambers Foundation's patronage and the student roster. Are you questioning that understanding?"

Elisa turned her gaze on him. "It was Kayden's spot first. She earned it with her own merit. It wasn't yours to give away like a party favor."

Allena let out a derisive snort. "Merit? Please. A child from a background like hers is lucky to even get a tour. Tate belongs here. This is his world."

The casual cruelty of the remark, the way it dismissed her daughter's brilliance and her own struggle, struck Elisa like a physical blow. She felt Kayden's small hand clutch her leg tighter.

She looked down and saw the tears welling in her daughter's eyes, a look of profound, adult hurt on her small face.

That was it. The gloves were off.

Elisa knelt, turning her back on the vipers. She cupped Kayden's face in her hands, her voice a soft, fierce whisper only for her. "You are the smartest, most wonderful girl in the world, Kayden Gilmore.Do you hear me? No one gets to tell you where you belong. No one."

She kissed her daughter's forehead, then stood up.The transformation was terrifying. The loving mother vanished. Faye, the corporate assassin, stood in her place.

Her eyes, cold and lethal, swept over the three of them.

"Mrs. Gable," she began, her voice a silken threat."I'm sure a woman in your position is aware of the formidable reputation of the Chambers family matriarch, Germaine Chambers. You would know she values the family's reputation, and its financial probity, above all else."

Mrs. Gable's face went pale. The name Germaine was a thunderclap in the small office.

"I can't imagine what Mrs. Chambers would think,"Elisa continued smoothly, "if she were to learn that the family foundation was being used for...questionable transactions. Or if certain board members' personal investments proved difficult to...audit."

She let her gaze slide to Allena. "How are your venture capital returns this quarter, Ms. Mills? Are they holding up to scrutiny?"

The color drained from Allena's face. The smug triumph vanished, replaced by a flash of pure, animal panic. She looked at August, her eyes wide with terror.

August's jaw clenched so hard a muscle jumped. He understood the threat perfectly. She was using his own mother, his greatest fear, against him. She was threatening to expose Allena.

"Elisa," he growled, a vein throbbing in his temple.

"Don't you dare."

No.7

"Dare?" Elisa laughed, a cold, empty sound. "You stole my daughter's future to placate your mistress, and you want to talk to me about daring?"5

She turned back to the terrifiedprincipal. Her voice dropped, each word a perfectly polished stone of doom.

"I want Kayden's admission reinstated. Now. Or my next call is to Germaine Chambers. And we can all

have a long, detailed conversation about exactly where the Chambers Foundation's money is going."
